Why does a proxy show as dead even though it worked before?

Free and shared proxies change constantly — a server can go offline, get overloaded, or be reassigned at any time. A "dead" result reflects the proxy's status right now, not necessarily its history.

What's the difference between checking as HTTP and HTTPS?

Selecting HTTPS verifies the proxy can successfully tunnel an encrypted (SSL) connection to the destination, not just plain HTTP traffic. If a proxy is only used for basic HTTP browsing, checking it as HTTP is enough; if it needs to handle HTTPS sites, check it as HTTPS to confirm that specifically works.
